I was sent this link by Jo Germ to help pimp his homey's band (I'm so used to Jo being in a dozen bands at once...all VERY well home-produced and charming in their own right...that I had to doublecheck to make sure this wasn't yet another one of his entertaining one-offs).

Now THESE guys are apparently (Canadian) Japcore crusties going the UN-noisy route by fusing "Poetic Justice" era Ripcord with Larm's 2nd ep...but with more explosive blastbeats (and I DO mean explosive) and deeply-reminiscent-of-Laukaus style vocals...which is a good thing, because...

A: It reminded me I need to bust out my long neglected Laukaus collection.

B: Stylistically, the band is dangerously close to power-violence...and ALL O.G. power-violence vocals are a fucking JOKE! Even "Godhead" Denunzio was Infest's weakest link (I NEVER liked his vocals even 20 years ago...it's called a fuckin' opinion...GET OVER IT). So Concrete Asylum's Laukaus locutions deeply please me.

The band is eyebrow-raisingly tight, the production is good enough for an LP...so let's cut the foreplay: Deep Bob Six, need any new bands for a split ep with Low Threat Profile? :)

I'll forgo the bragging, but I will tell you A PEDANTIC STORY:

It's some forgotten month in 1990 (so I'm what, 17?) and I'm making my weekly excursion to Wild Rags for "anything grind". I'd torn through purchasing Earache and Nuclear Blast's entire catalogs the previous year (how many of you can say you got the Symphonies gatefold the month it dropped? Well, Mike Abominator can since he worked there, and yes I would see him there, but that's about it :/ ), and was hooked so badly that I'd often pull out some LP or 7" (solely on the merit of pee-chee-folder-satanist or watercolor Michelangelo-on-meth cover art) and ask Richard the EXACT same three words about the release: "Is this grind?" The fucker always said yes, irregardless if it was "grind" or not. 99% of the time it wasn't, it was death metal...but I can honestly say his bored answers are what got me hooked on Paradise Lost, Miasma, and Autopsy's debuts...and My Dying Bride.

Oddly, he always called Pungent Stench "death metal" to me, but I picked up all their vinyl anyway.

ANYWAYS and ironically this particular demo wasn't one I had pegged for "grind"...in fact, all I did was pick it up absentmindedly while looking for Immolation demos, and before I could even set it down Richard (in a just as bored sounding tone) tells me "you'd better buy that now because the band is talking to Peaceville". I didn't give it any more thought, I was SOLD...because even though the cynical son of a bitch constantly lied to me just to make a quick buck, it had the unintentional effect of getting me to pay attention to "this other label that ONLY seems to put out either death metal or DOOM records".

I'd like to say Richard had this paranormal insight into which bands would become future classics, but honestly...I think he just wanted more porn money out of me (Mikey can back this factoid up too...Richard was a fucking porno F-R-E-A-K!!! Supposedly as large as Felix Havoc's RECORD collection!!!).

Fast forward 20+ years and here we are. As you can tell by the pics, I lost the cover and the teenage me decided to tape Altars Of Madness on the b-side. I don't know why I called it "Altars Of Sacrifice" as well as psychically writing John Peel...but the tape survived (I thought I had lost the tape TOO until literally yesterday!!!) with it's original band-typed title-sticker intact...and the whole shebang is finally...FINALLY...F-I-N-A-L-L-Y out here in the electron cosmos as a FLAC!

No need to thank me noisenheimers...just name your first-borns after me!

More than likely a fan tape made for a trader buddy in the pre-mp3 wasteland (the "layout" and haphazard construction of the song/session order screams "fun tape" and not necessarily something to be sold).

BUT...you do get LIVE U.B.R. (different set than I upped several years ago, I'll need to hunt for that other one in my archives again...I'd drastically cleaned it's sound too), and REHEARSAL Tozibabe...both Yugo bands from the earliest-to-middest 80s.

The all girl Tozibabe bizarrely remind me of a melodic Icons Of Filth minus the discore-noise (speed and aggression is sacrified for d-i-s-g-u-s-t and hopelessness...it's self-identifiably PUNK of the most basic variety)...and U.B.R., while being unintentional godheads in the later noisecore scene (due to the odd DISORDER style songs that helped fill out their set)...again, were stridently punk as shit (they did go thrash metal at the end of their career).

Nuthin' more to add......PUNK. AS. SHIT!

LaRosee and her husband Howie of Braintree. Much beloved uncle of eight nieces and nephews: Elizabeth, Michelle, Derek, Ryan, Kelly, Eve, Harry and Jill; a host of friends, cousins and co-workers.

At the time of his passing, Kevin was working in the IT department at Children’s Hospital Boston, where he had served in many capacities in his several years there. Prior to Children’s, Kevin worked for many years - beginning in 1992 - in the IT department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston. 20 years on and this (quite cheap) ebay purchase still sounds as I remembered it the day I purchased it from Wild Rags (I think I even got a better copy number with this new purchase too): Dutch grinding death metal with an extremely obvious drum machine (I'm not buying that "Peter" really exists) that's paradoxically well programmed, and VERY well played/recorded overall (for a 4-track). Imagine an inept Terrorizer (outside of the cover song) during their "Nightmares" years with vocals that go "bleh bleh bleh, bleh bleh bleh, bleh bleh bleh, BLUH BLUH BLUH!" At the time, these were the lowest vocals I'd ever heard without the benefit of one of Carcass' pitch shifters. There's several multi-SECOND length songs splatted around as a joke too.

Horrifying unrelated trivia: Had the O.G. Xysma demo stolen from a friend's car the year that demo dropped, and completely lost (more than likely in a move between roach infested studio-hovels) my O.G. My Dying Bride demo...first the cover, then the tape evaporated too. Again, purchased before the band was signed. Yeah, I'm pathetically seeking your bullshit validation. Wild Rags treated me well when I was sixteen (*sighs heavily).

An old internet debut makes a new internet debut...this time in FLAC! Jun had copied this tape for me (along with the SCUM tape...also released by Watch) a few years ago...which got quickly ripped for the blog. Jun ends up selling me the original tape...and I re-rip it (almost as quickly) to flac for the blog.

I keep trying to get Jun (and Cthuwulf's singer Sam) to write for Damaging Noise, since they have superior nerd-minutiae skillz to mine...so here's what Jun initially had to say about the tape (he's never been a bullshitter, so I can back this...though I DO think there's a few more noisecore basslines than he'd lead you to believe)

FBI (Future Blast Israel)
Watch's unknown HC project band after The Swankys! This one is really cool. Musically, it doesn't sound like any of his other bands or projects. It's more in the vein of the '80s U.S. hardcore, but with that typical Watch-styled snotty vocals! The music is fast, simple and straight-forward hardcore but they sound somewhat humorous as most of his bands usually are. I mean, if you're the fan of The Swankys and the other Watch related bands, you know what to expect. Gotta love the band's name and what "FBI" stands for. However, they misspelled the word "Israel" and the package and cassette labels say "Islael", of course. This band might have been a one time studio-only project, but I'm not totally sure about it. Includes 13 tracks. The cardboard slipcase package says: "1st Demo Tracks Album". Very, very rare cassette-only, super obscure release on Kings World Records. Never been reissued on CD or vinyl. Yes, Kings World actually put out many limited tape releases that's not very well known, like the ones by The S.C.U.M., Bastly Backs(cool band!), The Last Child etc.

I'd like to think I'm a guy who, when he applies himself, has a command of language (or at least I think I'm an educated enough guy who understands the concepts of communication)...but for this band, words escape me.

I got nuthin' noisenheimers. What else could be said? Along with DOOM, E.N.T. (named after a LARM slogan) were THE pioneers of modern discore. Call them D-Beat, and though they suckled at the DISCHARGE cock, you'd still be wrong. These boys worshipped at the worldcore altar of noise as a whole. For being a stridently self-identifying PUNK band, they were still down in equal measure for REPULSION (this love was waaay pre-Earache metalcore sellout), let alone DISCARD (and CONFUSE). I believe Phil Vane even lived with Dave from FEAR OF GOD at one point in his life.

Q: Grind friendly?
A: Grind friendly.

So here ya go, a re-up from the O.G. press (it should be at 320 if memory serves correct), as well as the entirely pointless 1991 re-record of the album for the Japanese market. Mark Wanky did time in ENT, and attests to even MORE versions of "Holocaust" lingering somewhere in the members collective archives.

Comedy gold at Mick Harris' caricature on the sleeve...though Stick had long replaced him. For whatever reason, this record gets partied ON hard...this is my 2nd copy, and if I was going to get nerd anal on it's condition, would only put it at a middle of the road "very good" (my previous copy was atrocious).

I'm assuming I wasn't gyped by this "direct from Japan" purchase because of the CRISP sound quality of the actual tape. No idea how MANY of the tape were produced, but to have what I really think is an O.G. dub will only aide in the eventual hearing loss for you...me...and the noisecore cosmos as a whole.

So...flattening 1-2 pop done the GAUZE/CITY ROCKER-era way (it works). It amazes me how the sheer number of bands in the L.A. scene have (unintentionally) shared this EXACT sound (minus THE NURSE's fling with arguable goth-rock on the 2nd ep)...yet will forever be banished to 3rd-tier/meat-n-taters-tour-openers obscurity.

But you still care more for THE NURSE...so this is what you'll gently caress your ears with: both studio visits as well as two live attacks (stole the rip, but the upload is mine...I'm well aware that's tasteless...do you care?).

LOUD fucking U.S. "neofolk" here from a somewhat hXc-punk oriented guy. Got to see them/him a few years ago...and again, one of the LOUDEST shows I've been to (and it was a virtual ACOUSTIC set!). Apparent and admitted influences are mostly DEATH IN JUNE, to the point of being a lo-fi (but loud) knockoff, but it's solidly engaging. (There's also conceptual nods to a drastically stripped down later-period/pre-reformation SWANS)

The cdr is the main winner here, and at two songs (one an amazing cover) it manages to encapsulate the project's ethos quickly and cleanly (though NONE of the complete discography is "bad", it can just be repetitive). A few atmosperic keyboards here and there, some quasi-noise, but mostly it's all about a man, his acoustic guitar, and some singular thoughts.

Dis-band, d-beat-off discore, so it's very much a product of it's era/fad...though I think what set them apart from their peers was a heavy similarity to DISCARD (Per/Chrille lineup) and DISASTER, along with a pretty wicked production that wasn't as stadium crust as DISFEAR, but not nearly as muddy as (*insert dis-name you know all too well here).

Kinda hard to micro-review something from a scene founded on the singular goal of "making it big" by blatantly ripping off Discharge...but this one is DAMN good gang!

Nearly every recorded note (worth saving), all the lyrics (finally), and a pretty slick layout if I do say so myself (had to lower the dpi on the included layout so the file would be UNDER half a gigabyte).

So yeah, this was my on/off/on/off band I did since 2002. Megatons of mistakes were made in every conceivable facet of even the concept of Cthu's existence. If a song could be played or written shittily, a recording or artwork ruined, a record label flaking or stealing our art and only masters...and the final nail in the coffin: the physical pressing of this discography getting COMPLETELY fucked up by the plant so fucking badly that we consider it's existence U-S-E-L-E-S-S...it happened to us...but I had fun...a LOT of fun.

We only played three shows in our entire existence, but people would be up front for us, they'd clap heartily, they'd even pit. Out of all places our demos did very well in Japanese distros (the ultimate honor), with Takahiro of Record Shop Base even listing in his website writeup what our influences were (without telling him). We didn't understand how he heard this, or why we were even liked as a whole (and if you download this, YOU may not understand either), but it felt good. And it's something that in the near future I'd like to start up again...but not only do it better, I'd finally do it right.

Some sessions I think still work ("Gaishu Issyoku" demo is my absolute favorite...but it's also the one we put the absolute most energy into), others are so horribly embarrassing that...well there's nothing that could be added there...it was fucking embarrassing.

I can't seem to find the final interview I conducted for the band sometime in 2009, which I considered the most honest and thorough I'd done (for the band)...but below is the 2nd best one for Slobby's MORE NOIZE zine from about the same time (earlier?). Some of the anecdotes you'll read will probably scream to you "bullshit lies!!!"...but it's the absolute fucking truth.

How the fuck did you manage to get GAI to agree to come out of retirement and split a seven with you? That is to say, what the hell is that shit all about anyway? By the way, someone was selling this slab for £1 (=$2) on eGay last week...
-- They didn't ;) ...around '99/2000 I got that now-easily-available video of them when they played with Kuro (Jun/Overhead tells me it was really a Swankys gig, or at the event horizon of changing names...Dig [yeah] told me he knew the dude who filmed that show and had traded for the footage around the same time ['84ish?] and was consequently told it was Gai...apples and assholes, I mean oranges dude)......Soooooo, being inspired by Patareni's/Godstomper's lack of morals with their own split-boots, we just wanted to have a little fun. That release was a fucking nightmare though, the covers weren't printed on the colored (excuse me, c-o-l-o-u-r-e-d) paper we wanted, the art printed illegibly, it took like 8 months to come out, and Barfo made us look like complete jerkoffs by chopping Gai's side to save money on the pressing (there's supposed to be 3 tracks, instead of the "1.75" that made it on there). Totally fucked up, but that's what we get for "thieving from our own scene". But two-tears-in-a-photobucket, fuck it. Conversely, the Death Sentence split ep was completely Peter/DxSx's idea (you'd jump at that too). Oh, we bear no ill-will toward Barfo, he's a LIVING POOH BEAR...it's IMPOSSIBLE not to love that guy (Gai?).

So obviously your "discography" can be downloaded off Sean's blog - but what do you get when you do so except "Unknown Artist - Track 1", "Unknown Artist - Track 2", "Unknown Artist - Track 3" etcera? In other words, what have you released or bootlegged off yourselves already?
-- All the trax and related info are included with the covers in the download. Our complete discography is 4 demos, Life's Flame lathe cut ep, the Gai split, Death Sentence split, Besthoven tribute comp track, Godflesh tribute comp track, Clay's never-to-be-released "In The Toilet" comp track, aborted one-sided ep, aborted 8" lathe cut (would have been 4th demo but RICHARD RAMOS is a weirdo), aborted Chaos Channel split (again, weirdos), aborted split 10" with Siviilimurha (master and master art stolen), oh and Acid Tears demo...which we all collectively hate (my fault).

Now, what is this all about a full-length Cthuwulf album being released what?
-- "Peace Through Aural Sodomy" is the working title and is going to be comprised of songs that are going on 4 years old now...all new trax I've been hoarding the riffs and refining (older than the trax that ended up becoming the Gaishu Issyoku demo). With us, it's ALWAYS a matter of making the time to jam. I'm making this a personal mission for it to be our tightest and best produced recording...a really high bar since we were all so completely delighted with the Gaishu demo. If we could maintain some semblance of "tightness"/production as the Gaishu demo and some of the "emotion" on the the DxSx split, we'd be pretty stoked. I can stand by these riffs, especially taking so damn long to refine the songs more, fix little problems I didn't want to create for us all again....only time is ever going to tell.

Oh, I remember reading some sort of jive on a Myspace bullentin about you being ripped-off by some label or some distro, what was that shit about? Are you doing dodgy deals? Why? How come you haven't been picked up by some Jap label already?
-- Some dude in Mexico jacked me like 50 bucks for a couple Genocide Organ shirts and some "brutal" dvdrs of "rare" mp3s...that's all that's coming to mind. I'm pretty fortunate in not getting jacked (often).

Acid Tears is some real good shit too. So this will be a 10"? I am going to recycle what I wrote on Sean's blog before : "I sense something very vaguely Rovsvett (Swe) in the voxs, but then again not really, the likeness is very surfacey. The Swankys cover is great too -HOWEVER it took me about 30 seconds to get from 'hell yeah, i like the Swankys references on this one' to 'hey man, this is a Swankys song'- Comment?

Another band that is interviewed in this here fanzine-mag is the Wankys from Leicester and I suggested to Mark something along the lines of Western noisecore inspired by Japcore seems to be the latest trend in what is broadly classed termed punk/hardcore - he disagreed. I think maybe he took it to mean something really negative - whereas I meant it simply as a objective thing - you know, there are suddenly many bands that play something akin to Confuse/Gai/Swankys. What do you think? Am I imagining things or what?

-- The closest that's gonna happen is when I get a drummer from your country, a bassist from Belgium, and a singer from Pennsylvania to all partake in a little "jam session". Check back with me in 2-3 years. [Note: A few years ago I seemed to have serious interest from Mick Harris of jamming out a similar c-beat project with him if I ever travelled overseas. I didn't think he was that serious, but when I mentioned it in passing to Jan AGx and Sam/Hideous Mangleus...they reaaallly wanted in!]

What equipment do you use?
- I play a modified kit-strat, ya know those "jam packs" they sell with the cheesy 1-watt amp as a bonus ("comes with a STRAP!"). The "modifications" come from me taking off all but 2 tuning pegs, 2 saddles, and one pick-up (the other two pick-ups were removed so I'd have more room for stickers...yeah...yeeeaaah). I use brass acoustic strings, a Metal Zone™ pedal I eq the fuck out of, and play out of a 120-watt Crate combo that I also eq the living shit out of. The band has achieved "pure" braindrill on the aborted split 10" with Sivillimurha, but lacking a bassist we're kinda forced into a more "crunchy" sound like NYC Mayhem (I'm fine with that). George has owned like 8 kits since I met him...I'm not a drummer, so you'll have to ask him. He's also the only professional musician in the band...to this day he still studies jazz dummers and other un-punkly "percussionists". We always borrow shit for Sam to sing through (poor Sam!).

From over here, it seems like there is a special brand of American crust-teenager that is not unlike the sociological monster that the media term the nu-metal (you know, striped longsleeves over too tight BAM-tshirt, makeup, boots AND baggy pants) - and this crust-teen is distinguished by a dresscode that can be described as crystal-black a la Doom-1992 stylee (but clean) with patches of all these new crust bands with names like Mystery, Dilemma, Total Arseburn etc (Discharge-or-Amebix-lettering, but they all sound like current day Metallica covering Disfear's latest) and there's like 50 bands in Chicago that starts with Dis- but not one that you have heard of etc. What is up with that shit? Is it a reaction to the Bush administration? Or is it just another variation of the Christian Right and the pledge virginity rings and the Church-of-Hate-Love-Murder-all-Abortionists movement?
-- Lameos who don't seem to understand that a bunch of pear-shaped dorks in flannels bought from a "real" thrift store and huge oversized plastic glasses can...will...and actually already DID deafen ears 20 years ago. I like fashion...it's "fun"...but it's not our lives. George puts NO effort into his look. Everybody needs to take a page from George's pamphlet on metrosexuality.

...well, the label asked me to design their side of the split picture-disc 7" with Straightedge Kegger (I did their art too! :) ) from a few years back. I receive my two (FUCK!) copies in the mail and...Disrupt's side was replaced with some super lame and super obviously photoshopped horror recycling the Vorkriegsphase 7" cover. Yhe label guy essentially didn't give a fuck when I emailed him to ask him "W. T. F? (!)". This art ended up being recycled (in black and white) for Rysahti when I "released" their demo through Noizepug Records.

Still, I thought it was cool to be given a chance to do art for such a high profile band, and I was rather proud of the effort I'd put into the concept (there's a pug in there!). My mother blindly looked through the art when I showed her, and said to me in a tone similar to a naive 6 year old "you mean, they're not eating vegetables?".

Now, was this split legit???

God-DAMN did this band impress me with it's debut here from just a few years ago. I was a few months late to the Citizen-awareness game...I couldn't track down a physical copy of the CD nor get the band to cough up a shirt when they had (still have?) an active myspace page...so I sucked the devil's dick and payed for the mp3s from some "Metal Downloads" site that EARACHE apparently had co-ownership in.

The music: "Classic" grindcore...of course being 21st century grind it has a crust-ish edge and more segues in arrangement than the neanderthalic barbarity of Lee/Bill NAPALM DEATH, or TERRORIZER's surgically precise song structures...but it's a fair assumption that YOU will hear some manner of OOOOOOLD grind in these songs too. Hell, the first three tracks ALONE are a crucible in headbanging ferocity! Those same three trax get rotated in my car as endlessly as the entire TERRORIZER CD has in...every goddamn car I've ever owned in my life!

The production too is thankfully analog (or faked to be analog) with nary a drum trigger and ALL noticeably shaky edges to the playing kept intact...OLDSCHOOL! Blastbeats performed by a crusty with a mohawk, and vocals are more "gruff" and tortured than cupped-mic pukes and raped-hag screams (still good though). Sick sick sick fucking band...and I believe was related to CRETIN (equally as killer) with a member or two? 2nd LP was never recorded...is it because one member became a tranny??? (true story)

Nerd-Obscure Japanese sludge-doom. Equal parts GRIEF and DISEMBOWELMENT with a probable nod to STENCHCORE in some of the faster riffing...though the overall "feel" reminds me of the excruciating rawness of fellow countrymen MAINLINER (who are actually noise-psych) or some of the better known rock-doom bands out there instead of death-doom (I prefer death-doom). Whoever the influence(s), the end result is sickeningly painful. Don't know if I like the vocal delivery, feels too spoken and out of step.

Typically Finnish-so-it's-hard-to-categorize thrash/punk from these semi-modern legends. I remember liking their logo when pictured in a scene report in MRR. I hadn't heard the band yet, but after having my ears shit in with POWER VIOLENCE for a few years, it was just great to see such a logo above the obligatory mohican Raw Punk standing there and...well, just standing there...BUT AT LEAST IT WASN'T POWER VIOLENCE!

After being sick of waiting an eternity to see these things in their entirety, I shelled out a medium price for these GERMAN BOOTREGS (which are "still" available).

I've only flipped through ONE of the O.G's. in my life (the issue containing Sugi, Tom, and Usugrow's art), and that was nearly 10 years ago...so if my hazy memory serves me correct, what facets of reproduction the booters got RIGHT (vellum inserts, color reproduction, and even nerding out on cloning the printed MAILER Pushead used for the first full size issue), they in equal parts got horribly WRONG (fax-dpi reproduction, artwork completely out of correct order). I still scanned these at 300 dpi, ROUGHLY sized them, and saved them all as jpegs for easy consumption/abuse. So any flaws you may see, don't entirely blame me.

Included in the picture above are some samples of "nostalgic emulation" on my end. One over 20 years old (never kept the original, though REHASH 'zine used it for one of her back covers), and one very recent (I found a photograph online of an un-inked picture that Pus pencilled for one of the guys in Cocobat...and basically just used it as a tester to flex my nightmarishly atrophied hand drawing muscles).

I'm iffy on G-Anx and Raped Teenagers being internet debuts, but am almost certain that the rest ARE!

ANTI-CIMEX sounds fucking insane through a soundboard, MISSBRUKARNA a little weak in the live setting, but HEADCLEANERS is TOTALLY fucking weak live. The recording itself (whatever the source, it's certainly not taken from that video online) is very clear and legible, but feels hollow and powerless (I'm also convinced this wasn't the fault of the probable walkman that was used to document the event). If the band had to borrow equipment, were too drunk to give a shit, didn't rehearse, or my pool ears just don't know what they're hearing anymore...it's finally online! :)

Now the story of the tape: If the truth be told, this tape once belonged to Chris/BCT (the tape certainly looks as if it's from the mid-80s), who then just up and gave it to my homie Jeremy, who in turn sold it to me for practical pennies (I did have a similar experience with Chris in acquiring the actual Death Sentence demo in trade for TAPING him GTA Rattus CDs).

The dubbing quality is above average, and seeing as the tape is comprised wholly of live/demo takes of Swedish bands, unless it was a stateside Ra-Punk completist who dubbed this for Chris, I'll assume the tape was compiled in Sweden for one of Chris's compilations.

I couldn't let Badger get away with his recent other live in Japan '89 ND gig without re-highlighting this old upload. Ripped from a copy of a soundboard tape I got sometime in the 90s, I was surprised this hadn't made quick rounds in the early tape trading scene (the kids show too, I seemed to be one of 3 people to have it in the mid 90s...and neither the soundboard nor the audio of the kids show was difficult to extract from the trader I was dealing with). Of course, once I put this link online a few years ago, it got well over 2,000 downloads within a matter of months.

But yeah, the soundboard sounds...well...pretty fucking good (I didn't have to re-eq it in the slightest)! ND always sounded so pissraw on all these live recordings, the bass getting that perfect gravel-avalanche crush, and the guitar bordering on chorus-pedal alien PAIN. This is also the infamous final gig where Lee and Bill decided to quit the band (and I believe final gig of the Japanese tour?). I don't remember what I ripped this at, but if it isn't in 320 I'll rectify it one day. And in case you're curious who put up that full youtube video of ND's appearance on the kid's show, it was converted and upped by his wife Helen.

I ALSO have another recording from the same tour of their show at Inkstick (but it sounds like crapola, definite walkman in the audience vibe...with LOUD bored conversation OVER the band).

Disgustingly obscure '80s Finnish hXc (I've seen ONE copy of their ep for sale...for 300 bucks...though the record was bootlegged not that long ago). Musically they're completely interchangeable with a majority of their peers from the era, complete with tight-ish recordings (but NO reverb for once??????) and the Finnish penchant for nihilistic permutations of "melody." (Songs however are straightforward and not as "epically" arranged as KAAOS). I remember playing this cdr incessantly in my car when I lived in Minnesota 6 years ago (probably the shitty-fuck-you-close-to-Finnish climate fueled my love for this disc). To the best of my knowledge this is a complete discography!

I have the demo's full cover somewhere (photocopy not digital)...just not scanned in this upload :(

Scans from my personal collection (Swankys Lifestyle scan is missing for fuck all reason, so I'll hop to that in time)…so you know they're sourced from the best possible images. All you have to do is print them out (onto the sheerest Vellum you can find) at Kinkos…or two 8.5x11 transparencies (that's how I did it in college...not that you give a shit about my old man stories)…or if they make 11x17 transparencies then your'e square there too.

I've been trying to get these shirts made for years. I keep giving the images to distros, they keep wanting to make shirts without sending me a single one in return…so don't be lame (again)!

I do know screen printing, but severely lack time and storage space to do this myself.

I wear XL ONLY in AAA all-cotton or GILDAN all-cotton. Poly-Cotton blends are a crapshoot for me and I'm always unsure which size works. Yes I'm anal and lame and OCD about my shirts…YOU get free images to bootleg. If this works out finally, I'll make MORE images!

Please make sure the images are centered up on the chest and not directly over my belly or off to the side by 6 inches…we've all gotten shirts like this…AND IT SUCKS.

Title says it all...these are my favorite releases from this once prolific Aussie hater squad. The 10" and EP are VERY dirty sounding borderline noisecore at a mid-tempo (it's probably more akin to discore ala DOOM meets SORTO). Resurrection though sees them return to the straight speedcore barrage they originally made their name with. It also remains one of my top-ten fast hardcore records of all time (I personally think it's THAT good, just somehow way underlooked). I never understood their drastic style (and noticeable wardrobe) changes, but the band slay in both genres. I had a chance to scope out founder Kim's grindcore band "Revolute" (they were supposed to have an LP on Nuclear Blast in '89)...but ya know...IT SUCKED!

Checking the old upload files, these were somehow in 192. I'll have to rectify that with a re-rip...one day.

*Pic above was written on the CDs tray card...Brad used to send me promos to review when Damaging Noise was a newsletter...and thankfully, Resurrection was one of them! Still wish Brad had come through with the 3x7" version he kept promising! :(

Crazy, irritating, atonal, and Japanese-ish epic hXc from these Ohioans with a fascination for international Reagan Regime nuclear evil. This is both demos pressed to wax and I'm fucking glad that happened (I snoozed on both O.G.'s :*( ). I love the production (piss-raw and blown out in that old 4-track way...though I definitely hear very audible tape hiss, the production values seem a few notches higher than 4-track), the songs are well thought out, I love the grinding/shrill guitar tones, and the packaging on the LP/12" is beautiful (I nerded and got the red wax). If Chris hadn't said he didn't mind this being online, I wouldn't have uploaded off the official download link (I put it on my own "server")...it's that good to support the label! (I'll look like a dick to you anyway...and you'll still download it). Oh, 12 songs in 16 minutes.

This is solid straight hardcore and not noise...but ya know, I miss no frills (but very well written) "meat n taters" hardcore...and this solidly f-e-e-l-s hardcore!

I can't say this won't be mistaken for "bragging", but it's only the truth...

That mysterious tape that appeared out of nowhere in Jun's distro? Sourced from my authorized boot. Those MP3s that started circulating a few years ago? Sourced from my 320 upload of the authorized boot. The bootleg LP featuring the '86 demo and Hatred Surge (or was it JUST the '86 demo?)? Again, probably sourced from my original upload. (Same with the War Wound demos...which Jim ripped for me from his masters as well)

THE STORY:
In 2004 I had a brief, though frequent contact with Jim Whitely, ND's bassist on side B of Scum (amongst other well known projects). Jim was refreshingly warm with me, an absolute treasure trove of trivia, and no ass-kissing simply one of the most intelligent and insightful people I've met in my life (we had some hysterical IM chats too about his different love affairs with beer, and how much I loved getting stoned at the time).

We traded tapes (he never owned any Swankys records, so I obliged him copies), and after a few discussions on learning how to rip music on our computers (CDs were easy of course, but doing vinyl and tapes was alien to us), he burned me a cdr of ND's previously "lost" F.E.T.O. demo (which post-dated Hatred Surge, and I believe was Mick Harris' first true studio recording with ND), as well as outtakes/rough mix of Scum's B-side.

Of course, I immediately leapt at his permission to issue these recordings on tape through my Noizaw bootleg "label", with the promise that I would only give the tapes out for free. Jim liked this idea and gave his consent. Since I was a fuckin' 'tard and had no clue how to put stuff online yet, I only dubbed the cdr as tapes and spread them around to a few friends to "distro" as surprise freebies with their orders. I promptly forgot about the tape, as the embryonic dl scene wasn't garnering me any real orders, and I soon abandoned the tape label (I was a product of the early 90s tape-trade/tape-label scene ya know). Here and there I'd see one of Jun's distro copies pop up on ebay (through one of Jun's own customers)...though fortunately they never went for more than 5 bucks at a pop. It did piss me off though that one of the first sellers touted it as "an original"...though I think the obviously 2000's-looking TDK lo-bias tapes Jun and I liked to use were dead giveaways to the bidders.

Jim and I drifted apart for reasons unknown on my end, and as the years rolled on I had taught myself how to rip my vinyl and tapes (I always have to fucking reverse-engineer EVERY aspect of my life). I started up the blog and finally posted Jim's cdr with no fanfare whatsoever. Within literally three days the demo was EVERYWHERE in the blogosphere...and once again I promptly forgot about the cdr...until about a month ago when Mick Harris mentioned a bootleg LP of this session, and he wondered "who" had made the tape available, as he no longer had a copy. I filled him in rather sheepishly, he gave me an "you're ok ol' china", and it got the gears rolling to "put out" the cdr once again in audiophile format.

So here it is! :)

This is the second time I've owned "No Elite" (their debut), and ironically enough I scored BOTH of the 12"s off of Max Ward (vicariously through his "agent", for literally 14 bucks after postage).

Post UNSEEN TERROR (though Pete's involvement with UxTx was mostly in the album's back cover pic) and pre SCALPLOCK...this trys it's best to be NEGATIVE APPROACH and STRAIGHT AHEAD (by way of INFEST) irregardless of the admirable covers the band does of Negative Ahead (Turkey Approach?). "No Elite" is the consistently faster of the two, while "White Darkness" has some more experimental parts that I actually enjoyed a great deal (though the fast parts are FASTER than "No Elite?"). Totally oddball production on either disc. I've never quite heard this exact sort of production for this type of music anywhere else.

F-A-S-T, catchy, and BURLY...if they were from the states and on SLAP A HAM you'd be fuckin' yer own mudda for a nickle to score copies.

*Trivia: I first heard "of" Harmony As One from the post-play banter of Infest's KXLU set...when the KXLU set was still a "rare" tape making the trade rounds (Infest also bagged on CRUDE SS, and a song called "Gay Is Ok"). I then saw Barney/Napalm Death wearing an H.A.O. shirt in Metal Maniacs or whatever...and the curiosity machine went a rollin'!

I believe this was the demo pressed to vinyl. I have the demo as well (no, not in MP3s) but I've never hidden the fact that I'm lazy, so I'll doublecheck later (translation: I won't). They were also well received in MRR, garnering them an interview, presumably for being Japanese, but singing in Spanish ("wow, we love SCHTICK in PUNK!"). If memory serves correct, a member of CFDL was also involved.

Musically, this is really borderline ANAL CUNT noisecore (over Colombian hXc worship) that is produced HORRIBLY. I'm not sure if the production really aides their sound here. There's a hollowness/distance to the obviously boomboxed recording that yes, fits a demo...but doesn't seem to want to work here (for once in the genre!) on an ep. From what you can make out though, it's fun.

I just ripped this as whole sides (presumably the other ripper didn't want you to miss any between-song nuances either), much like the other rip out there ...though mine is in 320 :)

I'm really surprised this wasn't online already (well it is NOW).

I was also decades late to the GRAVE game. I vaguely remembered the band right AT the name-changeover from CORPSE to GRAVE (from perusing WILD RAGS' fanzines 20+ aeons ago)...however it wasn't until 3 or 4 years ago that I finally heard their debut album "Into The Grave". I also had a chance to buy one of their OG demos at Wild Rags when they were known as PUTREFACTION...but..."ya know".

GRAVE these days strikes me as an anomaly...of course they've followed the drum-trigger production route in the intervening years, but their continual musical barbarity and overall knack for writing "slam" (gawd) decades before "slam" was a halfass term used by metalcore dorks never ceases to impress me. Outside of "modern" production methods (and slightly cleaner vocals) in their later work, they always remain "Grave". This choice to remain semi-neanderthalic (actually, their first three albums stuck fervently in succession to songwriting and production from 1989's standards) is paradoxically why they are so well known worldwide, but were never taken as seriously as ENTOMBED or MORBID ANGEL (think of Grave as ANTHRAX to Morbid Angel's METALLICA...hey yo, Morbid Angel "progressed" sooner! AND LOOK WHERE IT GOT THEM :) :p ).

As far as the discs (I bought the green ones! :) ), the packaging alone is a fucking work of ART. Anecdotes and lengthy interviews, some semblance of reproduction of the demo covers and other graphics from zines of the day. The cover and gatefold art is amazing, mad oldschool, and fucking depressing (this is a good thing...never thought I'd see hand illustrated art of this caliber for a death metal band EVER again!). The music seems reproduced as well as possible considering the age of the CASSETTE tapes (there's always audible hiss and dropouts even with the final demos).

And the music? As stated above, barbaric, moshy, and so much more "evil" than what their peers were bragging about in METAL MANIACS. From the outright death-thrash of the first demo, to the blackhole-destroyer they grew to be, this release is an exhausting crucible in PUNISHMENT!

Oh, when I ripped the LPs, several of the songs have extremely abrupt starts, or were "ended" a nanosecond too soon as they were being duped on a tape deck (to send copies to Wild Rags for me to NOT buy)...so don't cry at me that I'm cutting off tracks!

Because Japan has HEALed enough! :)

Not the wisest decision to burn through two copies of this ep back in the day...but when Sami Kettunen wanted to trade me OG presses of the early Terveet Kadet eps (the ones that go for 700 zenny coin these days), I just couldn't say no. Finnish punk as a whole is rather difficult to describe or even categorize even to converted ears. In vibe, the stuff is almost always urgent and anxiety-ridden, even when performed at a (below) mid-tempo pace or at grade-school-talent-show levels. Arrangement-wise, it really bears no similarity to other defining variations of punk such as Black Flag's surliness, or the simplicity of Discharge or Disorder. It's also almost never really played fast...like Gauze's proclamations of how they write a song, it only feels fast (and somehow, almost symphonically epic, even at TWO chords!).

The bands are definitely gloomy outside of their country's penchant for EVERY one of their studios to abuse reverb and delay...a (to my ears, beloved) technique which further solidifies a disquieting sense of "distance" and loneliness in the listener's mind.

The bands shit attitudes come off as the epitome of bitterness, irritability, disgust, uber-cynicism, and coat sleeve nihilism (but then, I also get the vibe of a heavily morbid sense of humor coming from them...all of them).

Lama's no exception, maybe a cunt hair (hi Erik) jollier than their countrymen...but still urgent, jaded, and totally projecting impulse-suicide (though Lama is one of their few bands where I actually feel them project a sludgy, mutant variation of "hope").

Top shelf shit!

FUCK! I love their logo!

Siiiccck, meaty, pit-hittin' vortex of MASTER/TERRORIZER inspired gorey death metal from these contemporaries (and compatriots) of PUNGENT STENCH and DISHARMONIC ORCHESTRA. Sonically ugly and abrasive, from the arrangements of the songs to the noticeably (and nicely) analog production (AND some nicely notable SLOP to the playing "ability"). This is one of the better templates to how much P-O-W-E-R a band can have doing things the simple way.

The band was damn good in evoking a strange mental nausea up through their first LP, "Rhapsodies In Red"...though the cleanliness of that LP's production was the stop-gap for my continued interest (revisiting the LP, I STILL don't feel a sense of forgiveness with adult ears, ala how I once HATED, then 20 years later LOVED, Napalm Death's "Harmony Corruption").

This particular upload is a bit confusing though. I had this ep some 20-odd years ago, and can attest to it only being 2 songs...however, what we have here is FOUR songs...done during the same session. More win for you and me.

I'll look in my archive for the band's demos and duly post them..."one year".

Swedish crashing noise pose. I found these demos to be more memorable than the ep. Fuckin' fuckers covered Fuckin' Lovers before I could! Sit there while record spins, pre-test multiple times to make sure input levels are good, separate tracks and clean their edges (YOU try doing that to the SORE THROAT or PROTES BENGT eps), rip to 320, wait to zip, wait to upload...and then...people will still bitch because it isn't in FLAC, tags aren't a novella of minutiae in every input field, or Keller's superior 320s will just flat-out annihilate any other copies of ANY other music out there...period.

If anything, THE ENTIRE PROCESS BECAME EVEN MORE LABOR INTENSIVE (and demoralizing)!!!

"Tape trading is an unofficial method of distribution of demo tapes encompassing musical genres such as punk, hardcore, and extreme metal. The practice was most prevalent during the 1980s and 1990s, and also saw people distribute recordings of live music shows. Tape trading was a postal system reliant underground network that relied heavily on the cooperation of fans of different musical genres worldwide, as well as the acts being promoting themselves this way eschewed any copyright in order to further spread their notoriety. Acts that gained a following through this might land a record deal.

This ad-hoc system relied on mutual trust, meaning that tapes were swapped in a kind of honor system; those who did not subscribe to this ethos and received tapes without returning the favor accordingly would become known as 'rip-offs' or 'rip-off traders', and were regarded with scorn. These guys are like the Swedish equivalent to the Chemotherapy 7". As sloppy as the SORTO ep, with an analog radio for a guitar...literally...a Radio Shack radio...for...a...guitar. To their credit, the band somehow (to the point where magic was the ONLY possible solution) picked up the "theory" of tightness for their 2nd demo. I'm not at a loss for words, I'm at a completely wordless understanding...G.A.Z.A is ULTRATALENT!

Me - Whatever happened to Mark Sikora? (The artist behind F.E.T.O.'s stunning cover). I believe he did flyer work as well (I know of one gig Ripcord played that had his artwork on it). Oliver/Cluster Bomb Unit told me he "thought" he was writing for a German music mag...but this was nearly 10 years ago. What were the dimensions for the origial artwork for F.E.T.O, as well as Skinny's art for Mentally Murdered. Why did Skinny take over the art reigns? What were each artist payed, and do they see royalties still...especially F.E.T.O. since it's never really gone out of press. And speaking of Sikora again...he did the Defecation LP cover. Why didn't Earache release Defecation? And don't talk shit like you usually do Dig, saying it was "2nd tier" etc...give us a concrete answer!

Dig's arrogant, dismissive, and borderline surly/contemptuous answer - Mark Sikora, wow, that's a name from the distant past, I guess he has a certain level of fame from drawing the Napalm Death FETO cover - but he did the Unseen Terror album cover for Earache before that one. From memory, he was just a German dude who used to send us art drawings and sketches, he must have done some flyers for the early grind bands I guess, so he got on our radar, and got to make 2 album covers for Earache.

I think he worked on early Nuclear Blast album covers too - like the Japanese HC comp Farewell to Arms (pictured).We liked him because he was conscientious, and was professional enough so that he could work to a delivery deadline, which was unheard of at that time for illustrators/artists, this was the punk/HC scene remember!

His style was a wholesale rip-off of Jeff Walkers now legendary, highly detailed, political pen & ink 'dots style' which he used for Napalms debut album "Scum" and some Carcass shirts and flyers. To be honest, that was Mark's main appeal - sure, he could do regular colour paintings as he did for Unseen terror - but he was mainly hired because Jeff Walker wouldn't or couldn't do another Napalm Death LP cover, I assume because he was saving his art skills for Carcass' benefit, not Napalms. The level of competition and rivalry between Carcass and the rest of the UK grindcore/death-metal bands is rarely if ever mentioned in the retrospective books on the subject, but was definitely real, and unspoken.

Mark was paid probably a few hundred pounds on a flat fee basis for the ownership of the art. Actual royalties for cover artists are rare, lets not forget that no big thing was expected for FETO at the time of its release, its only in hindsight that it achieved any sort of legendary status. The size of Mark's FETO art was 12inches square exactly, Jeff Walkers original for Scum was probably twice or three times that size, hence much more detailed. I think Jeff has pics of himself with the original Scum drawing online somewhere, he still owns the original of that.

Mark Sikora was quite opinionated about music, I recall he came to visit our office in Nottingham - this was a year or two after we stopped using him, and we pretty much had a stand up argument about the Death Metal direction of Earache's bands, he was totally opposed to this DM trend and tried to persuade me to stick to his beloved political HC punk output, which was his favourite style. I guess he failed on that one.

Hence it was really no surprise to me that he moved into music journalism, he wrote for Zap mag and then Spex - which is a huge selling German music mag, covering arty indie music and leftfield/ambient dance, it could be likened to NME. Mark was young, always highly artistic, maybe you could say even slightly eccentric. When he visited Earache, he certainly did not dress like a metal or punk dude - I vividly recall he had a long colourful knitted scarf and some kinda knitted beanie hat - nothing wrong with that, I only mention it to show how much of an non-metal or punk character he was.There is a pic of him somewhere, with me in Earache's office, I'll post it here when I find it.

In later years Mark worked for the VIVA2 music TV channel in Germany, akin to MTV2, and has made a few video clips for bands as a video director. I know he is really into films, it would not surprise me if he directed a feature film anytime soon.

After Jeff and after Mark - the hunt was on for a new Napalm Death artist. The band needed a suitable artist who could draw in that now trademark Napalm style, originated by Jeff (who in turn took it from G Vaucher of Crass) - namely, political b/w dotty/illustration style. Skinny was the artist for the Mentally Murdered EP - I think he was a contact of Mick's, I think from Birmingham area, the actual original art for Mentally Murdered is in full colour for the 12inch and CD but was released on 7inch in black n white.We never used him again as Napalm eventually settled on Mid from Deviated instinct for art on later releases.

The follow up Napalm Death album - Harmony Corruption and Suffer the Children EP were both designed by a local Nottingham artist- his name escapes me right now - he also laid out the back and inside of Entombed's Left Hand Path debut for us - its his hand print on the inner bag. We needed someone reliable as Earache was making serious plans for its releases by that stage, trying to chart them in the charts meant we had to up our game considerably and big money was at stake. Flakey artists who did not deliver on time were the biggest pain. We found this guy simply by visiting the local Nottingham art group and hiring the youngest guy, but he was not a metal or punk fan. At least he could deliver art on a semi-professional timely basis so it saved us a lot of headaches. Looking back his art is not the most recognizable of all the Napalm eras.

As for Defecation - the truth is, it was a half-serious/half-scam 'project' designed to get money from Markus Staiger of Nuclear Blast who was in the early days of setting up his label back then. Nowadays of course his label is a global powerhouse of metal on a massive scale, but back then Earache was the one making the sales breakthrough with the grindcore scene exploding everywhere. Nuclear were quickly in the market for grindcore bands, signing Righteous Pigs and Benediction - both tips from Mick Harris, Earache had already passed on both acts. We also passed on Master who Nuclear signed later on also, because of the success of Defecation.

The early pioneering grindcore scenesters were very few in number, it was maybe 25 people, tops - Mick Harris was the undoubted prime mover of both Napalm Death and arguably of the global scene as well. He was in contact with nearly everyone else interested in the scene, including Mitch Harris in Las Vegas of Righteous Pigs. If you look closely at the Grindcrusher tour footage of Napalm Death Rock City 1989, you'll see Mitch at the side of the amps, watching. He would eventually join Napalm on second guitar a year or so later to beef up the sound.

Mick told me that he had the idea of specifically making a project band for Nuclear Blast, because Nuclear would pay him a lot of money for it, and it would involve Mitch who was then based in Las Vegas - and it would be a Master-sounding clone band. We had already passed on Master as I just didn't rate them, too mid-paced, too boring for my tastes, I was into hyper speed grind, so this project didn't appeal to me on a lot of levels. Napalm death was the number one priority so it was strictly a non active band, and I figured that if another label was to give Mick a whole load of money for equipment etc, that was OK by me, as it saved me doing it!

It turns out that Mick turned the screws on Nuclear, asking for more and more money, which to their credit, they did not flinch, I assume because they were desperate to gain a recording with Mick Harris on it, at any cost. Mick asked for and got whole new sets of equipment, flights to record the album in Vegas, a session which was shelved. Then a whole new second recording session with Mitch flying to UK was set up, and Mick eventually recorded at Birdsong, and delivered Purity Dilution. Undoubtedly it was a lot of hassle for Nuclear, but the LP became the biggest selling title during Nuclear's early years.

I recall Mick giving me an advance listen and I was shocked at the power of it, and was immediately gutted because it could so easily have been an Earache release, maybe it should have been, but Earache had limited funds so had to them invest wisely, and whims and projects were not really top of my agenda, as I had genuine, touring career-minded bands queuing up to go in the studio.

Looking back it is surprising that none of the Napalm death dudes ever made a Swans style project back in the day, I guess they couldn't get a label suckered into that one.

My rip (and scans) and I found it difficult to find proper stop points to separate the trax. I usually don't mind keeping tape rips as a single track, as...well I'll admit I'm being fuckin' lazy with tapes...but unseparated vinyl rips annoy me to no end.

So basically, I'm birdwalking around saying that I'm sorry for that.

As for the music, it's not so much Swankys noise punk as mildly crashing (though not as anxiety-ridden or chaotic as crasher crust) and d-beatish. The guitar tone really let me down as it comes off as cliche instead of hellish (ideal braindrill would be either the dying-power-transformer tone of the COLLAPSE SOCIETY demo or CONFUSE overall...of course!).

The band has plenty of change-ups in the arrangements though, and that's a plus. The artwork/layout is fun, and the production is a crystaline clear mountainspring of 9 dollar bottled water joy. I'd be curious to hear their LP if Fabian E-V-E-R got around to putting it out. (is it even recorded?).

Wow! ABRAHAM CROSS meets...EARLY S.O.B.! These fuckers are ADDICTED to speed, but refreshingly not for the sake of speed! It's not the fastest thing you've ever heard, but the combined force of the almost Peaceville-'89 reverby type of Death Metal production, length (or lack of length) to the songs, and inclusion of ANTISECT-style metalpunk hesher-mosh lends additional grinding power to the fast parts, and p-o-w-e-r to this effort overall. Something is nagging at me they'd be weaker live, but here...DAMN good release!

Ex ROTTEN FUX/RUKKUS doing the Crashercore thing. The bands overall vibe has a more "pure" feeling than "forced coolness" like most western noise punks attempt (and pathetically fail at). Overly bass-heavy, muddy rehearsal quality, though the songs are tight and overall sound (more due to the "production") is enveloping. Not mindblowing, but I honestly feel this would go down very fucking well in Japan. Hope this lasts a little longer than Rotten Fux or godly Rukkus.

In fact, the opening songs are so fucking good, that if Connor is pulling a fucking "ANTICHRIST" on me...I'LL SHIT ON HIS RECORD COLLECTION! (After I cherry picked it for myself). Imagine a sound vaguely reminiscent of later Swankys (and 2nd Chaos Channel ep) minus any braindrill (though I doubt Swankys/Chaos Channel were a major influence, as this is unrepentantly OI! in nature).

"I had talked about nuclear trash in the post compiles it makes you laugh, I wondered how this could be olibrius which made much noise in 87 in France. I came across an old fanzine, Putrid zine # 1 and I had all the answers I wanted. In fact nuclear trash was the solo project of Xavier, bassist Wylsper at a time when Wylsper had split. They have reformed (they were only 2 at the same time) and was renamed Nuclear Trash Raw. It is rather better than bin nuclear pole was more rough, more ripped. Need we say more? We're in the grind, the songs revolve around 10 seconds and the fact that it is a drum machine, it takes away the performance side I think. But there are good songs...It's the grind. Let's say I found it interesting to propose that tape as part of the series on the French solo projects. It illustrates what I said about the fact that it was not easy to find people to play with the music popular at that time, namely the grind for Raw or hardcore interaction. But there were still some guys who launched even though it brought no big deal, except that to have fun. I do not think this project has gone far since Wylsper had reformed. Xavier was also a fanzine called "God Save The Noise", which should rather be oriented grind but I guess I never had the opportunity to read. I do not know what he did afterwards. I was wondering something, he was also nicknamed the Animal. There was not an Animal that was playing in Submerge?"

The definitive (at the time) farewell, authorized (at the time) by the bands themselves. Personally, I never understood Rapt's "legend". I do like the band, and I think they are owed their footnote as France's first (and last?) noisecore messiahs (there's several permutations of the term you know, with the word itself coined by LARM)...but their hyper limited output, noticeably sophmoric "ultratalent", and extreme obscurity really puts them in the same camp as RUIDO DE RABIA, M.A.D., RAW, TOTAL ARMSVETT (all bands coincidentally heavily influenced by LARM).

There is something to be said of this "Larm-Style" though...it's most obviously fast (most songs clock in at microseconds), usually noisy in SOME aspect (be it recording, guitar tone, or in Rapt's case, the "blown-speaker-cab" bass), and there's a strange variety in every song's arrangements that I never hear in 21st century fastcore/power-violence/generic blastbeat hardcore (c'mon gang, admit it, every one of these bands since the mid-90s up either blatantly rips off CROSSED OUT, or HERESY's "Face Up To It" LP). This brand of noisecore has a sort of "alien" quality to it that's never easily identifiable to other forms of extreme punk. To my ears at least, it's fucking infectious!

O.C.D.-Critical ears aside, here you have it...one true legend, and one arguable legend, teamed together on one wholly unforgettable tape! Sourced from France, the tape's country of origin to begin with, and ripped by yours truly...as always. :)

Yet another re-post that I had written a previously superior write-up for...buuuuuut I never saved any of those old pages (I've been searching/typing by memory into Google to see if any old posts pop up in a cache).

Pre SUFFERING LUNA and the only thing stylistically removing the two bands was the name change. Too easy to categorize as sludge, dark shoegaze, stoner metal, or "spacerock"... CHRISTFALL/SUFFERING LUNA were a monster all unto themselves. While the riffs and drum patterns were arguably "simple", and the tracks surprisingly short for the tempos they played at, they could still generate a Venus-level atmosphere to rival the biggest names in any of the aforementioned genres (why they never became one of those "big names" still remains a mystery...at least to me). Even without their utilization of H-E-A-V-Y multiple guitar effects, bizarre, instrument-generated noises, and existentialist (or just flat out weird) movie samples...they could first and foremost write a song.

I think the biggest testament to their talent was that they never got wrapped up in the self-indulgence that usually comes with bands who play "doom". There's no forced pathos, no highschool-hesher "my riffs are soooooo drugged out maaan!"...I mean FUCK yo, the songs come off as beautiful instead of (mildly) horrific like many of their "sludge" peers. Even singer Messe could borderline "sing" when he chose to (instead of sounding like a constipated goon from the power violence scene who was faking being heroin-tortured or "really, really gosh darn angry", rendering said vokes a fucking MOCKERY to all throats TRULY gruff and burly!). They were a group of East L.A. kids who loved pot and just wanted to ROCK!

Ripped from my tape, then I got all Keller-Krazy re-eq'ng the whole thing to remove as much tape hiss and lopsided "stereo" dubbing as possible.

There's been a bogus ExTx demo making the rounds on slsk the past few years. After a weighty discussion about this subject on **********, I took it upon myself to rip my copy (purchased in 1991 from Wild Rags) to run interference on this potential doomsday scenario. ExTx seemed to dub all their demos in MONO...so I had to do some basic finagling in Audacity to coax the brutality out to it's FULLEST. Ya also get their '94 session on KXLU. I had to dub this thing LIVE back when most of you lot were still dribbling out of your mom's {(o)} ...so yeah, there's radio static between the songs (cry, bitch). But the demo sounds great!

*Excruciating Terror were one of the 2nd-wave grindcore bands to emulate the dead serious side of the '88-'89 explosion so flawlessly (particularly TERRORIZER's type of extremely controlled song writing). Their riffing style however was more akin to E.N.T./DOOM than anything resembling early NAPALM DEATH. Throw in singer Victor's lifetime dedication to cupping a mic and you have t-o-t-a-l WIN! Alongside NAUSEA (L.A.), one of the only local bands I sought out to see perform live more than any other.

Noisegasms, the rarest Confuse bootleg finally makes it's internet debut. Nothing new to (lose your) hear(ing) here...but I did also include resized/cleaned scans of the band's show flyers ready for immediate print-out for your walls. Ripped as one track "for the experience" (it's a single sided ep).

So...the trivia: Bootlegged nearly 20 years ago by *****/******** (sold for $1.75 each, with the "forgotten" 20 additional secret copies sent to ****** ******** for distro), I was always curious just to SEE the damn thing after Chris Dodge's review of it in MRR (I seem to remember Chris being orgasmically adamant within the review that he was going to keep the ep for himself, saving it from the green-tape purgatory of MRR's leviathanesque vinyl-archive). Well, a recent (and accidental) ebay-stumble sated that curiosity...and I can once again sleep at night.

The "two live shows" ('84 & '85) I acquired from Hironobu Nakao in early '99 ("direct from Japan" for the audio-snobs). I casually spread the tape about to other traders for several years before I gave it a self-officialized cover to sell on my tape/cdr bootleg label at the time (Noizaw, which was to be "Phase II" in Maimed By Love's legacy). I'm unsure if the Old God Meet New God bootleg LP sourced one of the live shows from my tape, or they dealt directly with Hironobu, as their transfer sounds really great. I dunno how many new downloads the tape will garnish, as it's at well over 1,000 downloads from the old version of the blog...but for the super latecomers, enjoy :)

Threats & Promises: If I ever got my hands on the demo BEFORE Indignation (Mr. Wanky got it from Passy a few years back...and of course...he won't give it up)...you can bet your sweet ass I'd mercilessly upload THAT to your hot little hands too.

Apparently I felt everyone should suck a cock two or three years ago when I originally uploaded these CDs (I'll keep this theme for posterity).

16-17 are often lauded as Switzerland's "acid jazz" answer to early SWANS, which I think is a fair, though conspicuous assessment (it'd be just as easy to say "this sounds like John Zorn"). Now, the band isn't as hypnotic or demoralizing as early SWANS, but when you "sound like John Zorn" I don't think that's the intent anyway (the band always...always...feels so damn alive with life's flame!).

It does crush though, exemplified by Kevin Martin's production trademarks on some of the recordings (Trivia: the end trax were recorded live to 4-track...and still sound burlier than any metalcore pussys-of-the-month choking out MySpace Music this very second). Drums pound like lead hammers on...more lead. Bass lines are sharp and repetitive AND have no connotation of the usual lameness of the term "bass line". Saxophone is occasionally distorted post-performance, and even when it isn't, STILL writhes like a viper in mortal combat with it's arch nemesis ...THE MONGOOSE!

Could never figure out if these lot were all about shittin' on the boobs, or just thought boobs were shit (I've never been a tit man either). But...maybe they're tryin' to tell us boobs are THE shit! (still not impressed with boobs)

REGARDLESS...this is a surprisingly digital sounding butterfly-net of noisecore (bedroom digital...even if it was only inputted to the matrix post-mixdown-edit, any mid-rangey and overdriven analog depth was obliterated to the point of sounding like a 128 kilobyte rip...and this sound is IN the tape!).

I found the demo to be surprisingly pedestrian, to the point of being reminiscent of a western noise punk band (even though Boobs Shit is Japanese). There's also a healthy dollop of borderline thrashcore, so they actually stray a great deal from the standard "first Disorder eps" emulation (western noise punk does this too). Damn, there's even western poseritis in the artwork!

As much as I bitch, I still thirst for fresh noize...so "Big Ups" to Sash Mori for sending this to me a couple years ago (along with Isterismo/Extintos demos when NO ONE gave a fuck about those bands!)...I miss your tapes man!

"The first recordings released by many punk rock bands were released in 7-inch EP format, mainly because the short song nature of the genre made it difficult to create sufficient material to fill an LP. Many such bands also were unsigned, or signed to a minor record label that did not have the funds to release a full length album, particularly by newly formed bands. As many record stores would not sell demo tapes, the 7-inch EP became a standard release for punk rock bands, who could sell them cheaply nationwide, and thus be heard beyond the areas where they performed. These records would vary in length, having anywhere from 2 to 10 or more songs (4 being somewhat of a standard), and occasionally recorded at 33 rpm to lengthen running time (outside of punk rock many people refer to any 7-inch record as a "45", as it has been the standard speed for such records). Some of these recordings would qualify as singles, although this term was sometimes eschewed as being a mainstream design for determining commercial airplay, which did not apply to the vast majority of such bands. The term "single" also had a way of being somewhat dismissive of any tracks other than the primary one, relegating them to B-sides, when many bands, having a 7-inch record as their most significant release, would put all their best songs on the recording. Using the term EP in such cases would be considered technically incorrect, as they were not "extended", and the term 7-inch became a standard. For bands that went on to achieve commercial success, it was often customary for the original EP tracks to be released later on full-length albums, or to be somehow re-issued in another format.

The split 7-inch EP has also been a widespread feature in the genre, in which two bands would release such a record together, each performing on one side. This was a way to cut costs, particularly for self-released EPs, and was often used as a way for a more established band to help promote a promising newer act. Alternately, two bands with friendly relations with each other would release split EPs together. In some countries, split EPs are also used by major record labels to promote two new albums by wholly different artists, usually in the form of radio promos.

In cases where a band has too much content to fit on a 7-inch platter, but not enough for an LP, 10-inch and 12-inch records were utilized, usually at the 45 rpm speed more popular among dance music. Some more modern punk bands have also put out novelty 5-inch records, though due to a very short playing time and higher production cost than 7-inch discs, they are rare and usually utilized by bands with extremely fast songs."

U.K. ...'81! Apparently this demo is highly sought after, as my original upload garnered it well over 700 downloads...and there's multiple appearances for it/them on other blogs around the net, youtube, dissections of their tape-comp appearances etc, etc, et...cet...ur...AH!

On a whim, I downloaded this from Mr. Wanky a few years ago (when Soulseek was worth a suck) and found it to be the penultimate exercise in pimply-faced, misdirected rage against..."the system". I can't say this is completely inept, as there's a degree of semi-thought-out "arrangements" to the songs...but you can feel the idolization and emulation of The Bromley Contingent's attitude pouring in torrents from the speakers (they "sound" like they "want" to be punk so. fucking. baaaaaadly.). Production-wise it's typical of the era (distant, tinny guitars and heavy bass...somehow it also reminds me of the 2nd Larm ep's dirty vibe, minus Larm's speed and noise). This would fit PERFECTLY on Terminal Escape Blog!

As condescending as this review may sound, I do like this a great deal. So snotty...you'll catch a fuckin' cold!

My first exposure to the Brazilian FEAR OF GOD came in the mid-90s via my good friend Joe Melara (Joe also turned me onto a LOT of "true" death-ambient and power-electronics...which I'll aurally sodomize y'all with in due time). Several years later Joe had faded away (where'd ya go bro?) and I was now tapin' n' tradin' with legendary Brazilian taper (and trader) Luis Mosh, who I scored these (drastically) upgraded copies from (replete with covers...FINALLY!).

Since these two demos were boomboxed live (as it should be) about the only thing missing from the band's FEAR OF GOD worship are the patented Keller cup-mic'd "Pfooorrrg!"s (the singer here actually reminds me of Barney's more gravelly days). There are enough audible riffs and "tightness" in the playing that leads me to believe this was a serious project and not another ANAL CUNT/MEAT SHITS blurr of...well, blurr. And from what very little I can gather of the song titles (in the native tongue), the band were as equally serious about protesting the evils of the world as they were protesting musicality.

73 songs for the first demo, 22 for the second, and leather jackets with SORTO painted on them, as well as horribly homemade ANTI-CIMEX and NAUSEA L.A. shirts should be enough to magnetically draw your pudgy lil' fingers to the download link. I may have another tape with live material on it...but...these are to be ripped for another day. Damn does the first demo cover want be made into a shirt or patch!

An album that was supposedly a HUGE influence on TRAGEDY, I'm hard pressed to put this particular album in ANY musical category. Not really metal or "rock", and not quite identifiably punk (plus…the HORNS! THE H-O-R-N-S!!!)…lush, symphonic production, a paradoxical "happy melancholy" in the vocals…the entire package just throws me into a realm that opens my third eye and has me soaring into auditory HEAVEN. This isn't just an "exquisite" release…IT'S FUCKING MANDATORY! (And it's related to SIEKEIRA! :) )

*I hear this mostly in the vocals, as it's closer to crasher crust musically...but there is a noticeable "Doom" vibe than most in the genre (actually, Sore Throat with just a magical smidgeon of Abraham Cross may be a more appropriate descriptor). Production is bizarre, sounds like a live recording in a more-cavernous-than-usual rehearsal space...but every element feels clear (enough). Probably the only tape I ever chopped up the trax (I usually want you to get that old-fashioned tape-trade experience ;) ). Logo is too metal for me.

This band was a HUGE deal last year...and several of my friends and I are still trying to figure out why. For starters, they were mismarketed as the Japanese SHITLICKERS (lies!), and hyped as the new buttfuckers of the system for making a frowny face at a cop as one of their outdoor "gigs" was shut down. Then...there was the final nail in the furrowed-brow-judgment-coffin...they covered Shitlickers' "Warsystem"...again. How many...punk bands...have covered...Shitlicker's...Warsystem ...over...the...D-E-C-A-D-E-S??? The song isn't THAT cool folks! It's not like the rest of Shitlicker's tabs are that insanely math-grind-tech to transcribe! I think I taught myself "Night Of The Holocaust" in...the SECOND I picked up my guitar to "learn" it? AND I WAS STONED!

Minus the hype, this demo would be just a generically fun listen.

Long, flooding swirls of oddballness from this VERY long running death-ambient project. Uncharacteristically rhythmic, and occasionally reliant on identifiable instrumentation, this tape is a far cry from the oceanic depth of his later works such as "HERESY" (absolute must-hear!) and collaboration on "STALKER" (ever hear a cloud sing?). It's a partially live recording, but for those familiar with the aforementioned works, the noticeably unhoned, kitchen-sink vibe may be due to limits of the technology at the time, as well as Brian only beginning to shakily explore the periphery of his imagination in forging said soundscapes. Still, it's an engrossing release...with all the sonic bludgeoning, it still feels "graceful".

"Brian Williams is a British electronic musician often credited for creating the dark ambient genre with albums recorded under the name Lustmord. Williams started recording as Lustmord in 1980 before joining SPK in 1982. Lustmord has extracted field recordings made in crypts, caves, and slaughterhouses, and combined it with occasional ritualistic incantations and Tibetan horns. His treatments of acoustic phenomena encased in digitally expanded bass rumbles have a dark ambient quality. Some of Lustmord's most notable collaborations include Robert Rich on the critically acclaimed "Stalker", Jarboe [of Swans -- S], John Balance of Coil, Monte Cazazza, Clock DVA, Chris & Cosey, Paul Haslinger and experimental sludge group The Melvins on "Pigs Of The Roman Empire". Williams released the album "Heresy", considered a milestone of the genre of dark ambient, in 1990. Here's another one that had long legs online once I upped it (my cover scan is even on Encyclopaedia Metallum). Hoarse Jap grindcore that was initially HEAVILY influenced by TERRORIZER (with the Morrisound-ish production to match, though not on this demo obviously). Straightforward, straight to the point (throat) with existentialist lyrics rendered almost completely nonsensical with some very muddy Engrish. This was sourced from one of Anal Cunt's drummers (who I was tape trading with at the time) who in turn had received it from the band in Japan. I can't believe it's been 14 years since this came out, and nearly as long as I rabidly devoured their debut 7" on 625 (which I'd love to own again HINT-HINT). A majority of the band's output is good up through the LP with the sun on the cover (yeah I pose in not remembering the name this fucking nanosecond). After some attempts at TRAGEDYcore (ugh!), where did they go? (?)

Se@n: Wotz poppin' Gary? First off, though it may embarrass you somewhat, I'd very much like to say that it is an extreme honour to be given the opportunity to conduct this interview with you. Why don't we start by introducing the readers to who you are, (uh) age, and some of the bands/styles of hardcore you've been involved in both prior to Death Sentence's formation and after it's demise. You seem to have an affinity for Anal Cunt and C.S.S.O. now!

Gary: Well, my name is Gary James McGillivray, I'm 40 going on 12, and I've been into what I'd like to call extreme styles of expression for the past 25 years. I left Death Sentence sometime in 1986 and reformed for a really bad tour of Adelaide in 1988 which was a mistake. The first band I attempted to play in was Zyklon B (a bit of un-PC name maybe, but it was 1980), then a Stooges cover band called The Hogheads, then the Bader Mienhoff with Scott before joining Death Sentence. Sorry to disappoint but I'm not totally into grind, gorecore or whatever as some of it I've heard really lack a bit of guts and it really methodical. But bands I have heard that I do like are CSSO, Brodequin (probably metal really), Warsore (from Australia) and Basket of Death (who scare the shit out of me). I liked AC when they came out because they really went over board and took the piss.

Se@n: Death Sentence played ultrafast hardcore that gave your peers (Larm and Siege) a blood-soaked run for their money. Playing at such brutal speeds, while not entirely uncommon around the globe, was still a bit of a novelty in the early 80s. Why the decision to play ultracore, and did you guys realize how fast you were playing at the time? Did you just consider yourselves a standard hardcore unit ala D.R.I.? Oh, (duh), who was in the original line-up of D.S.?

Gary: The original line up of DS was Peter - vocals, Con - bass, Matt - guitar and Izzy (I think that was his name) - drums. Matt and Izzy were in a band called Permanent Damage (kinda meat & potatoes hardcore). Matt and Izzy didn't have the time to do both. Peter had heard of Scott and I trying to get something together (though we'd never really met) and decided to give it a try out.

Scott and I were just into playing really fast. With Matt and Izzy it wasn't very fast. When Peter and Con showed us the riffs I remember Scott and I just saying "yeah that sounds great, lets just speed it up by a factor of 10". So I guess we weren't that conscious of any influences per se just playing what we wanted a band to sound like. Our first gig was with I Spit In Your Gravy. We were on first. Because Scott and I were outsiders we hardly knew anyone and some of the more fashion conscious punters said to Peter we didn't look very "punk" (!?!...I've never been into the fashion thing although I've had tattoos since I was 15).

So anyway, there was all these punk rock type I Spit On Your Gravy crowd watching us setup. We had five songs: Balance of the Nation, Air That We Breathe, Christian Fanatics, Moral Majority and Death Sentence. The set went for 3 minutes, I Spit In Your Gravy's went for 2 hours. The first song was Balance of the Nation and Peter vomited up baked beans right at the end. No one said anything. There was just stunned silence. Then we went into the second song and the whole place just erupted!!! So we did our set again and by the end the place was just about trashed. We did the set again after I Spit In Your Gravy with even more chaos. After that we built up a following.

Se@n: Honestly, hardcore was a real bitch to track down in the early 80s, yet members of D.S. seemed to always be on top of the most cult and extreme records from around the globe. How the fuck didja score (especially so quickly) crazy shit such as Headcleaners eps especially in an often ignored (by the punk community) country as Australia? And speaking of lovin' hardcore, why the decision to not include (the most amazing cover I have EVER heard of) Negative Approach's "Nothing" and SSD's "Glue" on the "Ryan" EP?

Gary: During the late 70's and early 80's I was heavily into buying punk records. Some of my favourite bands were (and still are) The Saints and The Leftovers. I've got a live Saints EP from 1977 which brutal as fucking anything. Did you know that Black Flag used to do "Nights In Venice" an awesome Saints song. The Leftovers have an EP called Cigarettes & Alcohol from 77/78. Two songs I Only Panic & No Complaints are total thrash. (I think Peter saw them live a few times, he's from Brisbane). Apparently the fans from these two bands used to have pitched battles. I think they call some of this stuff Killed By Death.

I also liked early Damned, Dils, Maus Maus (US), Negative Trend, etc, etc from this period. In the early 80's I moved to Melbourne (I was born on a farm in a place called Warrnambool). I really didn't know anyone. There were few punk gigs except by maybe Corporate Body and The Sick Things (awesome band, Mick Turner from indie band Dirty Three used to play guitar for them. Anyhow, there was a record store called Missing Link who got some of the classic records in such as the Discharge singles and Black Flag "Jealous Again", etc. One day I picked a magazine for 10 cents called Discords which had the Void (top 5 all time fave bands) / Faith Split, SOA EP and Minor Threat 1st EP. It cost me $13.00 in total to send for them. This was around 1982, this stuff blew me away.

Anyhow, Maximum Rock 'n Roll started coming out which had all these reviews of bands etc in it. I was working shift work 13 day fortnights, etc and making good money. On night shift all I'd do was sit down and write to all these band labels and began ordering records as soon as they came out. I also started trading with a guy called Tos from Holland who played guitar in Agent Orange and Cory Rusk from The Necros in the US. So basically I was able to get nearly every thing I wanted in exchange for obscure Australian stuff. Headcleaners, Neos, Shit Lickers, Mob 47, Terveet Kadet, The EU's, Cheetah Chrome Motherfuckers, Pandemonium, Indigesti, Raw Power, etc, etc. I didn't know Peter at the time but he was basically doing the same thing.

I guess we decided not to do any covers for the Ryan EP because we may have been a bit embarrassed as to how they would come out. Scott and I joined the band in early November 1984, our first gig was on the 6th of December and the EP was recorded in January. So it happened all very quickly.

Se@n: Have you heard of Seven Minutes Of Nausea? You do know they formed (in '85) solely from being inspired by seeing D.S. live right? (They actually played real proper ultracore at first and were seriously damn good at it!). How were crowd reactions to D.S.? It seems from listening to the "Waldo" promo that the crowd was really into you guys! That was your very first show correct? Being Australia's fastest band (and I say that with truthful recognition!) how did the other Aussie bands of the day take to you?

Gary: I've heard some of their stuff, although it was years ago. They used to do ultra fast 10 second songs and stuff - is that right? I didn't know they formed after seeing us live. The crowd reactions were great, especially with the first proper line-up! Although some people said that our songs should've been longer to give them more time to get into it! The Waldo tape would not have been our first show. A lot of bands did not really like us at the time. I could put this down to three reasons:
1...Jealousy, especially after the rave reviews we used to get. I remember the original bass player of Vicious Circle calling us un-musical in a Maximum Rock n' Roll interview once. Although I take it as a compliment.
2...Peter had a reputation for being quite violent. (I know he'll probably read this interview but I know he won't mind). But in retrospect he never beat up on anyone who didn't deserve it.
3...The association with drugs. (For a while there we were referred to as "Drug Sentence").

Se@n: Speaking with other Aussie bands and individuals it seems to me that you are a people of above-average intelligence and wit. I know that statement sounds like a huge ass-kissing fest, but reality's reality pal! Have you noticed this trend yourself, and does it have something to do with a possibly more advanced education/social system? This isn't the core question though...wot I'm REALLY getting at is that why is your nation so well educated/worldly yet balanced with an attitude of TOTAL FUCKING NIHILISM!!! No shit, your people (in the various scenes at least) are serious fucking misanthropes! This may seem humorous to you, but to a foreigner it is a certainly lucid detail!

Gary: Great question (Aren't they all? -Se@n). I've a Degree in Political Science and a Masters Degree in Environmental Studies (Environmental Politics) which the state paid for. I could talk politics for ever and ever. But more to the point the state paid for my university education when I think in the USA everything is down to the market, I.E.: you have to pay for it yourself.

While I'm not sure whether we are more educated than anyone else, Australia certainly looks pretty fucking stupid at the moment. If you do think there is a dose of Nihilism it would come from the geographic isolation. This is especially so with bands like the Saints and the Leftovers in the 70's because they had no contemporaries in sound. "I'm Stranded" by the Saints came out in June 1976, the first Independent punk record, 5 months before The Damned! The channels of communication then were very limited. With the advent of the internet information is at your fingertips so it's not too hard to be influenced by different sounds.

Twenty years ago you had to be dedicated and persevere if you wanted to find something worthwhile. Um, I guess I didn't answer your question, maybe we're misanthropes because we're from convict stock.

Se@n: Why was the band so fixated on Ronald Joseph Ryan (the last man hanged in Australia), a man who had been dead nearly 20 years when D.S. formed? I did a few internet searches on him and managed to find an Aussie anti death penalty site citing Ryan's story and eventual demise. His tale honestly moved me, and I am curious if you lot were maybe paying tribute to his name with the ep? Was there a growing pro-death movement in Australia at the time the band formed, hence the "Ryan...Thanks For The Support" title? Ryan was wrongfully hanged for being a supposed cop-killer, right?

Gary: I really do not know the fixation about Ronald Ryan. It is a question you would have to ask Peter. I can't quite recall if there was a growing capital punishment movement in the mid 80's but nowadays it is completely dead issue (no pun intended), it's highly unlikely it would ever be re-introduced. The sentence was carried out for political expediency for the current Victorian Premier (Henry Bolte) to be re-elected. Ryan supposedly shot a prison guard in a failed escape attempt. It has since been proved that he couldn't have done it. I don't believe in the death penalty because I think all criminals especially ones who commit heinous crimes so they can be made to have it on their conscience for the rest of their lives. Mind you if someone did something to my family, especially my young son, I would want to extract vengeance as I see appropriate.

Se@n: Why the name "Death Sentence"? Were you aware that there were already British and Canadian D.S.'s as well? Did people ever confuse all the D.S.'s? Obviously you were the BEST of the bunch! (Though the British one is semi-cool in other ways).

Gary: Peter came up with the name Death Sentence which I believe would have been connected to the Ryan fixation. It is a pretty standard "punk" name so when I joined I wasn't surprised that other's existed. I don't think anyone ever confused us except maybe in British and US fanzines (maybe).

Se@n: Did the band ever climb into different kangaroo's pouches and play demolition derby with the 'roos?

Gary: Never had any Kangaroo Derbies, although Peter was tripping once and broke into a factory and went for a joyride on a forklift and demolished the insides.

Se@n: The band certainly had a firm grasp on living the "Chaotic Life." I understand that all of you had/have a STRONG affinity for alcohol and that it got all of you in trouble on occasion. Amongst the stories are crashed tour buses, jail time, and lawsuits. How did all this hard living effect the band? Did it drive a stake between you all or bring you closer together? When I used to drink I always had a fucking BLAST getting loaded and talking about hardcore! How did Peter reconcile drinking in his personal life and an anti-alcohol song on the 12" entitled "Alcohol"? There's a sound byte on the 12" that sounds as if Peter was going apeshit at a show cuz he was so tossed and everybody was trying to get all involved to kick the fuck back.

Gary: Yep...drugs and drink drove the band so to speak. I used to smoke a little, pills, whiz, etc but mainly drank. My only vice now is alcohol and I'm still in love with it! I think in the end our indulgences drove us apart. There were a lot of fights with the Paul, Davo, Peter and myself line-up (don't know about the other line ups). I think the most out of it time was when Paul was living with a bunch of alcoholics above a bottle shop in Queensberry St. Carlton. No one had much money, so any alcohol was a godsend and (it was torture having a King Solomon's Hoard of alcohol underneath, we always debated as to whether to try and break in, but it would be so obvious who did it).

One night a miracle happened. It was at the start of winter and one Sunday night a truck overturned out the front doing deliveries. Half a load of Fruity Elixir wine (by the cask) was wrecked because of the damage to the packaging, but it was still drinkable. Rather than have it removed we convinced the owners to dump it in the courtyard/garage and we'd take care of it (which we did). So if you can imagine it, here was this 6 foot high mountain of fruity elixir to be drunk. The place became one long winter party house (and vomit pit).

I'm not sure how Peter reconciled the "Alcohol" song and his personal life. I think it was just an acknowledgement of his own personal demons. The person on the front who is losing it is not Peter, it is a now deceased guy called Borgie.

Se@n: Why weren't you asked to join the 3rd line-up? When I discovered that you were no longer involved with the band by the time of the recording of the unreleased "51st State of America" LP I was really shocked! The band was rocking harder and heavier than ever and back to form, and from hearing those trax I could have swore it was still you pulling duty on guitar! What were your views of the band with the 3rd line-up and was your split amicable?

Gary: The third official line up was Jackie, Peter, Simon, Paul and John (I think). After the "Pain..." recording things were really beginning to strain. Opinion started to diverge and I got asked to join STP, which were guys I hung around with more than the DS crew anyway. I joined them and suggested Peter start looking for another line up. Davo moved to Queensland. The split was amicable. I think Peter and I have always had an unstated respect for each other. The 3rd line up was much better than the "Pain..." line up as they were really getting a great sound together. I remember seeing them play with DRI, they nearly blew em' away.

Se@n: Why was the 12" so decidedly more "artsy" and rockin' than the previous straight-forward ultracore attacks? I'm not saying the 12" sucks (well I did once but it honestly grew on me LOL), but the change was an abrupt one. I'm completely infatuated with the trax "Anti Apartheid" (FUCK YEAH!!!) and "Sweet Thing of Innocence" (REAL cool!). How did the band as a whole feel exploring the 12"s many nods to lost love? Why the title "If Pain Mends My Mind?"

Gary: With the 12 incher we really tried to do something different, which didn't quite work. I think if I could digitally re-mix it (as I said before) it would sound like a completely different record. Initially, I thought the lost "love thing" we should have shelved, but with Peter singing it he kind of infected it with bitter irony (FUCK YEAH he did! -Se@n). I think the title "If Pain Mends My Mind" sounds fairly straight forward at first, but it is totally ambiguous. That is, on one hand if you suffer you'll be better for it, or on the other hand it may pay homage to self mutilation, i.e. cut yourself up a bit and you'll feel all the better for it. Or it could even mean "...if you do what you're told you won't get hurt yet you'll be going against your convictions...but if you do decide to suffer the pain at least you're following what is on your mind". A bit like you'd "rather die on your feet than live on your knees". It's all a bit confusing really.

Se@n: Why did D.S. break up? I really love you guys, and as obscure as you were there are a few other thrashers 'round the globe who found you killer enough to bootleg the first EP and select trax from "51st State." Do people still come up to you and give you your "props" to D.S.'s legend, and how do you feel about the boots (they're very well done, though the "Needle Park" one was produced from a shady label called Sludge)? I know reformation plans are absolutely out of the question, but ya seriously touched enough people that much mate!

Gary: The last official line up was complete crap. The line up consisted of Jim (great drummer), John, Peter, myself and another guy who was a wanker who part owned the Dreamtime/Funnel Web. He had absolutely nothing to do with what we were trying to do, which was to play good fast hardcore music. A total straight arse. If this line up played now he'd be trying to get us to be like Good Charlotte or Blink382 or some other crap. The point was that the sound became really formulized merely by this guy playing and directing the sound because he part owned the label.

I re-joined for about 2 months. We played one Melbourne gig then toured Adelaide. It was really fucked. Peter arrived the day before and started raking up a bar tab (would you believe the arseholes at Dreamtime convinced Peter to register DS as a business...this is where it was heading) thus everything was "charged" to the band.

Anyhow, we headed over in a commuter bus by a Hell’s Angel called Rasputin whom we paid in illegal substances. Apart from the shows being crap a guy from Adelaide asked for the keys to get his wallet from the bus. We thought he meant on the bus, but he actually drove about 10 miles pissed out of his brain to collect it from his house. He crashed it into a Jaguar car and together with a bar tab that wouldn't get paid the arseholes declared Death Sentence (as a business) bankrupt. Thus DS disbanded. I left before this event happened, not to play hardcore again until seven years later.

I've no problem at all with bootlegs, sometimes its the only way you can get hold of the music. Now and then people bring up Death Sentence but not a great deal to me as I live in Adelaide which I have done for the last 9 years and all the DS people live in Melbourne. I have not lived in Melbourne for 13 years. However, I will be moving back to Melbourne at the end of this year (2003) which will be kinda strange but almost like a home coming.

Reformation? I have not seen Peter since 1991, but Sean has kindly supplied me with his e-mail so I'll contact him. I'd be interested in what he is up to. I'd love to do a reunion show with Davo, Paul and Peter. Who knows?

Se@n: D.S toured the states???!!! That's wot it sez in the ep...how was the Yank reaction to the band and was there anybody notable that ya played with?!

Gary: DS did not tour the states. We were going to do a tour with Adrenalin O.D. amongst other's, but Peter and Con had a big falling out and line up 1 ended. The reason it is mentioned on the EP is because by the time it came out we thought we'd be in the US.

Se@n: Please describe what you've been keeping yourself busy with since the end of D.S. (kids? cthulu? public service? model kits LOL!) and PLEASE give us a lil' info on your involvement with the recent Gacy’s Place and your new "kinda fucked" band (more lawsuits eh?)! Are you in contact with any of the old D.S. members? How are they doing (I know Pete is late for the grave) if you are? It seems from our short contact that you've gravitated towards harsher forms of hardcore (i.e. keeping all your Fear Of God records but selling off Anti Cimex), so as a quick note, when Grindcore made it's first waves what did you think of it (since you'd been breaking velocity barriers for years prior to that genre).

Gary: Since DS I've gotten educated, started working (which I don't want to do anymore), worked in the Northern Territory for a while, etc. etc. and have a 10 month old son called Declan Augusts McGillivray Priedkalns (his mum is Latvian).

I also lived in Warrnambool for a awhile and played in several bands (mainly Loudmouth (Ramones type stuff) and Slugfelcher (ultra core)). Gacy's Place were the most fun band I've ever played. We've had so many funny experiences that I'd need to separate interview to cover them all. It's a band that never had any real malice between members. We even had a farewell gig which included a get up on stage and do the foulest thing possible and win a prize. That was in 1999. Dick, the lead singer, is the total showman, maniac, craziest, funniest performer I've ever had the pleasure of doing shows with. He also my best drinking buddy and a total gentleman. He has a Z-Grade movie company called Chessy Knob Productions and makes crazy short films. He has also run several short film Z-Grade film festivals. From coming out dressed naked with a 2 foot piece of kabana taped to his cock to blowing up a PA after chain sawing in half a giant effigy of Santa stuffed with offal and blood and shorting out the fold back, he does it all.

Anyhow we now have a new band called the Kamikazes that plays dementedcore. I've no contact with old DS members and no idea how they are. Hopefully I'll catch up when I re-locate to Melbourne. I'm not sure what I thought when I first heard grind core. I first heard Napalm Death on a shitty tape deck and thought they were pretty awesome, all those blast beats. However, I think the first Carcass album is what really blew me away. I only glimpsed at the cover and thought it was just pictures of vegetables, not bodies. I think what we were doing was a lot different to grindcore though.

Se@n: I have a very young friend who happens to be named "Ryan" (really!). He's enamoured with the fact that guys "our age" are still active in varying degrees in our scene (hey Gary, bet my wheelchair can outrace yours!). As a personal favour, could you publicly lend any advice here for how he and others his age can persevere in "keeping it real 'till the grave"?

Gary: Please don't take the points below as gospel, god know's I've fucked up a lot in my life. Excruciating Jerry was the one who loaned me both tapes for the blog (this was my "payment" for doing Bloody Phoenix's 2nd LP cover)...so yer not gonna hear a better rip A-N-Y-W-H-E-R-E ...AND YA GET THE FULL COVERS TOO!!!

So here's the expected boring trip down mammary lane: I had Resin Heaven about the time it came out (L.A. Times, however, always eluded me)...and ALL my peeps were yakkin' 'bout how much they sounded like E.N.T. (well, E.N.T.-ish). The band was also a bit of a gimmick then, as they had no bassist, but three guitarists. Of course, the lineup was eventually revamped into something "normal" and they morphed into the "Power Violence" shock troop they notoriously became known for. (I always felt they were a damn good grind band though...with hXc vocals).

Had a chance to scope the band (in the middle of their style-changeover) when they recorded a live radio set for KXLU. The studio was, and still is...fucking S-M-A-L-L. For the life of me I can't remember Jerry being there...but he was...there were only like 4 of us besides the band.

Who treats ya right? DxNx...RIGHT?

Sent to me from Jan/Agathocles 7 or 8 years ago, I ripped this as one track at 320 (complete with a scan of Jan's archaic, one-step below dot-matrix track listing...on the back of used corporate looking paper at that). The quality is fairly exceptional given the age of the recording (soundboard of a live gig), and the band's home country (Yugoslavia). They were also uncharacteristically tight, given the connotations of the preceding sentence.

At the time, Jan described them as a mix between early 80s Italian hXc and sub-blast death-thrash (he was unusually specific with "which" bands from either genre...so let's play the "what do you hear game"). Information on the band though is non-existent...I don't even think that's their real logo above. I'm also wondering if the posts I found on them just today at Corpus Delicti, Audio Heaven, and Encyclopaedia Metallum were sourced from my original upload.

Upload-arrogance aside, these former Eastern Bloc boys were neanderthalic and F-A-S-T. A lot of Los Angeles bedroom black metallers should start looking to these heads for inspiration.
